Shortlands (constituency)

Shortlands is a parliamentary constituency electing one representative to the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. It had a registered electorate of 2,556 in 2006. It is one of eight constituencies in Western Province and (as its name indicates) covers the Shortland Islands.〔(2006 election results ), National Parliament of Solomon Islands〕
The constituency was one of the thirty-eight original constituencies established for the First Parliament elected in 1976. Its first MP was Remesion Eresi.〔("Members of the First Parliament" ), National Parliament of Solomon Islands〕

In the general election on August 4, 2010, there were seven candidates for the seat, including incumbent MP Augustine Taneko and prior MP Albert Laore.〔(List of candidates ), ''Solomon Star'', July 19, 2010〕 The seat was won by independent candidate Steve Laore,〔Steve Laore's family relation to Albert Laore, if any, is unspecified in available sources.〕 who obtained 1,073 votes, and was thereby elected to Parliament for the first time.〔("2010 National Elections Final Results" ), ''Solomon Times'', August 16, 2010〕〔(2010 election results ), Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation
Steve Laore died after collapsing suddenly on August 25, a mere three weeks after his election.〔("Newly elected MP dies, Dr Sikua tells PM Philip to continues where he left" ), ''Islands Business'', August 26, 2010〕 A bye-election was held on March 30, 2011, and won by Laore's brother, Christopher Laore.〔("GG Announces Bye-election Dates" ), ''Solomon Times'', February 16, 2011〕〔("New MP for Shortlands" ), ''Solomon Star'', April 1, 2011〕
